As of October 12th, Google is requiring an API key for sites that use Google maps (with a charge for more than a certain amount of loads per day). We have completed the upgrade to VRS 2.4.0 that allows us to use a Google Maps API key.
If anyone notices anything odd or broken, please let me know.
Update: I have received several inquiries related to the “clustering” feature on the new version. If you want to modify it’s behavior, here is how:
- Adjust the map to the zoom level where you want planes to start being “clustered”. If you want absolutely no clustering, zoom out as far as possible.
- Go to Menu -> Options -> Aircraft -> “Cluster aircraft at this zoom level”
That’s it! It should be retained in your settings cookie for future sessions or until you clear your browser’s cache.
Let me know if you have any issues.
Thanks,
Dan
Hi Dan,
Great site by the way, really superb.
Since the upgrade I can no longer hold my settings – I have to reset everything each time I enter the site. This was never an issue before! can you help?
Thanks
Simon
OK, I can’t reproduce this, but try the following:
1. Go to http://global.adsbexchange.com/VirtualRadar/settings.html, and hit “remove all”.
2. Clear your browser’s cache.
3. Completely close and re-open your web broswer. See if that does it.

i dont get what the big blue circles are ? where have the planes gone ? surely you need to explain changes like this to users
Zoom as far out as you can, so you’re looking at the entire world, Follow Step 2 above, then zoom in closer.
Do you see planes now?
Dan, I saw you post about the new cluster feature and gave it a go following the instructions (Menu -> Options -> Aircraft -> “Cluster aircraft at this zoom level”) it appeared to work once and hasn’t done so since. If I follow the instructions I now can’t see the option ‘Cluster aircraft from this zoom level’ anymore.
Any thoughts?
Yeah, so many people were complaining about it, I ended up turning it off. Also, it seems to behave incorrectly if your browser is not Chrome… 🙂
Hi Dan,
Since the update I have had various issues on the site via my IPhone.
1) my location hasn’t updated for weeks and thinks I am about 40 miles away from my current location.
2) now when I “pinch to zoom” the map zooms in or out, but the planes & text remain at the previous scaled size and fill the complete screen.
Not sure if there are google maps issues or just my phone, but thought it was worth noting.
Thanks
Steve
OK, can you try using the Chrome browser instead? I believe these are issues with VRS and it’s interaction with safari iOS 10.
Try Chrome and let me know if it corrects some/all of this.
No map visible since a few days, only aircraft (not Always) in IE11, Firefox is oke
OK, I haven’t been able to reproduce this. Can you try clearing your browser cache? Settings -> Internet Options -> Browsing History -> Delete?
That should do it.
