    Hello forum members,

My apologies to trouble the forum with this request. Just wondering if somebody might be able to help as the situation is becoming troublesome and frustrating to say the least

Up until a few days ago, my VRS connection to ADSBExchange was absolutely fine, then all of a sudden it would no longer connect. In the feed status box in VRS, the connection status for ADSBExchange just states 'Connecting' and no messages are received.

Now, the strange aspect of this is, I use a free VPN called Windscribe and when I connect to the VPN, VRS will then show 'Connected' to ADSBExchange and then everything works as it should. I have checked my inbound firewall rules for VRS and everything appears to look in order. I have also attempted to test the connection and came up with the following error message which I have attached in a screenshot below.

I am unclear as to whether Windscribe is causing the problem here. I have used it for at least 18 months and I have never needed to use Windscribe in order to have my VRS connected to ADSBExchange if that makes sense. Now VRS will not connect without being signed on to Windscribe. I uninstalled Windscribe in the hope that it may correct the problem, but to no avail.

I am not too familiar with this type of aspect of I.T, so if anyone can help with this, it would very much appreciated.

    Many thanks,

    James

It looks as though you are being blocked, I had a similar issue connecting from Azure. Along with ping tool try also telnet. Are you familiar with the telnet tool. Try and telnet to the DNS name first and then also the IP address and port? If telnet does not connect then you're being blocked for sure. Try and use 1 of the other ports also, try port 32005. Good luck.

    Hi MDA,

    Thanks for your reply.

I have run a ping test on that I.P address, but I'm not sure how to interpret these results. I have attached a screenshot showing the result.

Judging by what Steven Gaj (thanks by the way for your reply) and according to your list, would I be right in saying that I am blocked?

Many thanks to you and Steven for your assistance.

Edit: I forgot to state that I changed to Port 32005 several days ago on the advice of a friend.

Ping results are normal, Try another port (32005, 32015). Your current IP is not listed :).

Thanks MDA, appreciate your time. I've tried both 32005 and 32015 and unfortunately it still doesn't work.

    So try Telnet.
    Run PuTTY select telnet...

In terminal window you should see incoming data.

    Hi MDA,

I've never heard of PuTTY until now. I'm currently installing it and will follow your instructions and let you know the outcome in due course.

    Thanks again.

    MDA,

I attempted the PuTTY test and unfortunately could see no incoming data. I configured PuTTY exactly as you stated in your screenshot.

I have attached a screenshot of the error.

    Appreciate your help.

It looks that your IP is blocked. Contact James and temporary use VPN.
    I can't help you more.
UPDATE Please check your router logs, maybe amount of data caused that port is locked.

Just a couple of other suggestions that may or may not help.

Perhaps your VPN provider has made some changes that's blocking you, or it could be some rogue windows update. Sorry if I'm stating the obvious here but have you tried:

1, Completely turning off your Windows Firewall.
2, Turning off any AV tools
3, Have any rules changed on your physical/router/firewall
4, Check your IP address here: https://www.whatismyip.com when you're on the VPN and off the VPN. The public IP should change.
5, Try the same Putty test when you're on the VPN and off the VPN.
6, Try and point Putty to 8.8.8.8 for the IP and 53 for the TCP port. This should work. Just to test Putty tool is ok.
7, Try and use another network if possible. Perhaps tether using your mobile if poss.
8, Try on Wifi and on Cable
9, Is the machine running in the Cloud?
10, Is it running on a Virtual Machine?

Try and connect to another VRS instance on a different IP address, perhaps somebody can suggest a different IP just to allow you to do a quick test. I have nothing handy at the minute.

    Good luck

Many thanks Steve, I've tried a couple of things on your list, but will certainly give the rest a go.

    Thanks again.

If you are blocked it is because you were sending the TCP data back to ADSBx from VRS. Check your VRS setttings.

    Or

You are trying to use 1 second feed (or other feed) and your connection can't handle the amount of data, so after a bunch of connection loops it bans that IP to prevent a slow denial of service attack.

Looking at VRS config on screenshot no rebroadcast server. Clear explanation.
    Switch to 32015.
BTW: James can you unlock his IP manually?

    Hi James,

I'm certain that I'm guilty of the second point you stated, the 1 second feed.

Would it be possible to have the ban lifted and I will use a longer in duration feed please? My friend set this up for me initially with the 1 second loop as I didn't know how to.

My apologies, I'm not familiar with how all of this works to be honest.

    Thanks,

    James

Sure, happy to help out. How does one become a feeder?
