I'll talk to you about hardware here.

  2. regarding the Raspberry Pi, is the $40 including the whole kit or just the board? I see whole kits on amazon for over $200.

What kit are you referring to? The board is $40 if you can find one, add a TF card ($8), ADSB-X SDR dongle ($35), an antenna ($50) and cable ($TBD based on length), case ($13), power supply ($15) and it's still less than $200. What Amazon kit are you looking at? Please post a link. Lets figure out your real installation needs, and then look for the cheap single board computer. Like I said, I got an Orange Pi 3 LTS with case, PS, heat sink for $60 from Amazon. See the thread above from me in Hardware on that adventure.

  4. I was just scrolling down the list on amazon. don't have a specific link.
too bad i can't just use my windows 10 laptop that i use for my ATCS server. But aircraft feeders isn't on windows. I don't have money to buy any hardware for awhile. need a new windshield on the car, now the fuel pump might be going out, i had to charge a new tablet on my Amazon prime card to make payments because my tablet kept crashing and being slow. Maybe i should do a go fund me page for a feeder?

Bummer on the car. With a bunch of work, you *might* be able to feed on Win 10 - IF you can install a VM (virtual machine) that runs Debian linux. As I understand that, the problem may be making the USB SDR dongle talk to the VM without windows interfering with it. If it works OS and software wise, your cost would be antenna, cable and SDR for under $90. If you had a tower to mount an antenna, and are in an area of interest, ADSB-X sometimes funds feeders. Good Luck and Best for the Holidays!

  6. I don't have a tower but have outdoor antennas for 2m ham, scanner, ATCS. and there's no feeders anywhere close to Emporia. I miss all the low altitude stuff. everything lower then 3,000 feet. the closets feeders are at Wichita or Topeka.

Good location! When you get some bucks, I'll contribute to your feeder.
