Question concerning feeding

    Hello,
I'm new to ads-b as well as a novice linux user. I'm running updated Lubuntu on a vintage Asus EE-PC. To feed adsbexchange, dump1090 is running my rtl-sdr in a terminal (no gui) and I have the "script" installed.. I know this is a "bare bones" setup but the EE-PC shouldn't be straining because decoding and feeding is all it's doing. I'm assuming it's feeding but that IS an assumption. I read about the several ways to see if I'm actually feeding, but here's my question...
Shouldn't I simply be able to open a second instance of Terminal on the pc to see if I'm really feeding? The problem is I don't enough about Linux to know what commands to input in terminal.
    Anyone wish to comment?

You can open 2nd instance of terminal (or new tab) and insert:
    Code:
    nano /var/log/daemon.log

mda, that command brought up a window labeled GNU nano 2.9.3. Unfortunately, nothing is happening in the box... no text is appearing. It is my assumption that the adsb script is "automatic" which means that I take no action with it. I assume that starting/running dump1090 is all I need to do and the script does the rest... true?

You should see something like that:

If not please find my post about missing rc.local on new debian installations and follow the steps described.
ADSBx script need rc.local installed. Dump1090 is called in different way on startup.

I found the post you're referring to and it's pretty involved for a new linux user but I'll see what I can do with it. Thanks for your help MDA and I'll repost later, success or failure.

Everything is related to Raspbian/Debian. In case of troubles I can help. Success !

Reading more posts... running HTOP. Can see netcat maint but not mlat maint. Perhaps mlat has problems. Still trying ...

fixed mlat by making rc.local.service executable. Mlat now visible in HTOP. Still no output to nano window... still trying.

Believe it's working now in spite of nothing showing in the nano window. Multilateral coverage map shows my ID with "green" coverage area. Thanks MDA.

    nc localhost 30005 AVR/BEAST from dump1090

nc localhost 30005 AVR/BEAST from dump1090... when entered, displayed scrolling ascii like characters which I assume is raw data I'm sending. Thanks, MDA and James for your help. Now it's just a matter of improving the antenna system to increase range coverage. :)

What kind of antenna are you using now?

I'm using an indoor 1/4 wave ground plane. The antenna has an aluminium disk for the ground instead of the "spider" radials. It's in my radio room in a brick home, the antenna being only about 3 meters above outdoor ground level. Not the ideal situation, but I'm in a rental home for now and cannot do what I really could do as far as antenna work. Even so, I can regularly "see" aircraft at 40 miles out and occasionally around 60.

In my office I use CoCo installed directly on window frame outside. With "flat coax" interconnector F-F. You can think about something like that (or j-pole).

You're sure doing quite well with your window frame antenna. That's the kind of range I'd like to see here. I'll see what I can do with your idea.

I think you can easily improve your performance without major costs.

I believe so. I'll just have to be careful how I work so I don't cause damage to this home. That's the challenge.

Tie wraps, "flat coax", you don't need to drill holes. :)

That will just show that your dump1090 is working, not that you got everything else working and sending data to ADSBx. Are you competent enough to edit the netcat-maint_sh script to send to a custom port?

Even an antenna in the attic as long as roof material is not metal will give you 80% of range of outdoor mount, at least in my experiments so far. I'm going to play around more today with putting it far up in the attic and not just in my garage roof.

I'll check out flat coax. I will read about the netcat edit and see if I feel confident to set up a custom port. Unfortunately, my attic is useless for radio. The builders of the home used aluminium foil covered board insulation on the inside of the roof. It's like a Faraday cage. :-( Hope you do well with your antenna placement change!
