Ok, so let's call it "potential backdoor".

    Update:

Well, I finally made the move to my rural home. I'm now in North central Texas. You can see my "flag" on the mlat map (when the feed is online) somewhat below the city of Wichita Falls.

The upside: Because of the "openness" of the location, I have a very clear view of the horizon.

    The downside:

As I guessed, there is no internet service available at this remote location. I consider myself fortunate to have usable cell phone service here. What I have done to feed adsb-x is use my cell phone as a wifi "hotspot" so the adsb dedicated linux pc can connect to the internet. Unfortunately, I can only feed adsb-x while I'm at home. When I leave, I have to discontinue the feed so as to have my phone with me. That's not my preferred scenario but it's better than not being able to feed at all.
Note to admins... if you notice that the feed from my custom port is intermittent, that's the reason.

    Future plan:

I intend to swap out the folded dipole with some sort of a gain antenna such as the flightaware vertical for a bit more "reach" in distance, and possibly locate the dongle at the antenna to save coax loss. I'd use a usb "extension" cable instead of a coax run.

ktb, are you in the service area of any wireless broadband providers in your vicinity?

https://www.newsourcebroadband.com/ looks like it might be close by.

fvance, you're right about newsourcebroadband being the nearest broadband provider. They are located in the nearest town to my location... Graham, TX. I contacted them with the hope that we could have 'net service. Unfortunately, they looked at their coverage map and saw that my location was too far North for them to provide signal. Thanks for taking time to look at this situation fvance. :)

I wonder if we can get you a Google Fi dongle to test? You up for it if I can get coverage? Who's cell service do you have?

James, I hadn't heard of a Fi Dongle until I read your post. I'm really not up to doing anymore than just getting the adsb system working. There's no time to do anymore than run the cabling for the permanent installation. I'm still in the "test" mode with adsb. Everything uploaded so far has been done with just temporary running of cables laying across the front porch to the pc sitting on a chair. Thanks for the offer anyway. Verizon is my cell service, btw.

Well if you decide to do a permanent install ... we can try to send you a Google Fi feeder kit

Thanks James on the kit offer. When things are less busy I'll post on this thread again..

I'm calling it a backdoor because it installs a sudoers file without informing you, and THEN makes a connection to a server AND opens several ports for listening. Unintentional back door sure and maybe not for the author but still a potential backdoor for someone. It may be pretty innocuous as sudoers files go but, all it takes is a little buffer overflow here a little privilege escalation there and all of a sudden you're rooted. It's opening up a needlessly huge attack vector of a security hazard just for the sake of a little bit of convenience.

Ok I understand that not all of these things are in physically accessible locations, some of them do need remote control but it shouldn't be the default and it should warn you in big red letters not to enable remote admin unless you know what you're doing, just like on the millions of routers that get taken over by exactly this kind of negligence on a regular basis! Not the end of the world, just very poor practice
