Hi all, Forgive me if this has been discussed before but I've had a good look round this morning and couldn't see anything but have ADSBx stopped showing the USAF F-15's out of Lakenheath? I hear and see them going over practically every day but nothing on tar1090, I see the RAF, most types, The Dutch, Belgian, French etc., AWACS in fact all sorts but no F15's, there has been quite a big exercise going on this week and there have been more than the normal around, especially at night but no F-15's. I even hear them on my scanners, I think you get my drift. Hope all are well, looking forward to your comments. Colin
Mode C transponders can't be practically located. Either they use Mode C transponders or they have their transponders off.
Hello Wiedehopf, Hope you are keeping well, thanks for your reply. I used to get the F-15's, (not since I've been on ADSBx) maybe they have changed from Mode S to C or not transmitting at all but wouldn't they be picked up with MLAT like other non transmitting aircraft? or do they have to send some sort of a signal that can used to plot a position? I think I just answered that one in my head now I've typed it out but I would still be interested in your comments when you have time. Best Regards
ModeC can't be practically located. ModeS will show up on MLAT if we have the receivers. And no we don't have primary radars nor secondary radars like the military / ATC do. You need a secondary radar for locating ModeC (well you could try MLAT but it's far too impractical for us.) And for aircraft not having a transponder you need primary radar.
First time I've been accused of that. Still clear as day, I thought MLAT was done through your ADSB ground stations and the the information they sent you, I best go away and have a good read methinks. Thanks.
We don't really have good documentation on that stuff. I'm gonna get smack for suggesting this, but this is probably one of the better articles: https://flightaware.com/adsb/mlat/ This isn't a bad page either, but it's about secondary radar (adsbexchange can't do that , we just use the ModeS responses and the spontaneous ModeS messages for MLAT) https://www.radartutorial.eu/13.ssr/!sr01.en.html
