Let me begin by asking for patience as all of this is brand new to me . . . I am ready to make the initial purchase to set up my station, and wanted to ask the group (particularly those with the most knowledge), based on the software and other factors that I may not have considered, should I get the CanaKit Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ with 1.4 GHz 64-bit quad-core processor with 1 GB SDRAM for $80, or throw another $20 at the purchase and get the CanaKit Raspberry Pi 4 with a 1.5 GHz processor and 4 GB RAM? Maybe I'm way out in left field with my research, but I hope someone will tell me if I'm even headed in the right direction. Thanks again for everyone's patience, because I'm sure I'll have more questions as the days and weeks pass.
https://github.com/wiedehopf/adsb-wiki/wiki/adsb-receiver-shopping-list $100 for a Pi4 seems over the top. No need for 4 GB RAM.
Thanks. I looked over your list and saw you had both the Pi 4 and the Pi 3 listed, but I wasn't sure if there would be a reason to "upgrade." I'm trying to keep this as simple as possible for myself - and everyone else who will hopefully be helping me along my journey. I'll just purchase the Pi 3 in your list and reach back out when I have all the pieces of my new station. The antenna and coax are already on the way . . . Thanks again for your help.
Pi 4 2GB is $35 most places. Pimoroni policy is to only make the most recent Pi revision and the Zero.
Thanks James. My Pi 4 and SDR were ordered today. I'm looking forward to getting everything here and hooking it up so I can begin the challenging process of teaching this old dog some new tricks.
It's easy. Getting a good high endurance SD vs a generic cheap kingston goes a long way. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07P14QHB7/
I'll try to attach a picture of the card that's coming with my Pi "kit." If you think I should get what you sent the link to, I'll order it . . . like I said, I'm just sticking my toes in the water.
I hope that's not the case . . . My '4 just arrived and I'm looking forward to getting it up and running. I was just searching for "Setting up ADS-B on Raspberry Pi for Dummys."
I’ll have to keep an eye out. I bought a 4 and thought I read there wasn’t software ready for a 4 so bought another 3b+ and am playing with it right now.
RPi4 works fine. Just needs the official power supply and one of the metal cases doesn't hurt either for cooling.
But don’t you lose signal with WiFi and Bluetooth with the metal case? Ahh, I wasn’t aware it was working for the Pi4. I see it now. thanks.. Don.
Hi, Can't agree with the Kinston comment I've been using them for years with no problems, then on the other hand I have also used sandisk for years and also with no problems. Still each to his own, not a criticism just a passing comment. Cheers Colin
Yes a little but it will still work, that said many people turn WiFi and Bluetooth off anyways to save power and stop interference with the SDRs.
